Boss is Back to Blogging

Hello my name is Rick and I’m the owner of Wall Glamour, it has been a long time since I’ve blogged and I don’t think I ever really introduced myself. I think I was always hiding behind the ‘smoke and mirrors’ of the internet.

But this is me on the set of 60 Minute Makeover in 2010.

I’ll do a quick recap on how I started Wall Glamour, but this blog post is mainly about the future not the past. Over the last few years I’ve stopped most of our social media because of a general lack of time, as we switched our business focus to commercial interiors.

Wall Glamour was created in 2007 when I was working as a freelance graphic designer from my garden shed. I decided to buy a vinyl cutter to create stickers for a few customers. Then a friend asked if I would do some graphics for his office in Leeds. This was the birth of Wall Glamour®. At the time it was just flower stickers on a wall and his windows, but that one job was the genesis of what would become Wall Glamour. Before I knew it I could see a whole new market in home decorations with wall stickers. I found 12 websites globally doing it and none in the UK.

We started our website in July 2007 and our first sale came at the end of August 2007. In August 2008 I asked a friend to join me and we set up shop in a big unit and continued to grow, taking on staff to help with orders and jobs. We managed, to get to number one on Google for ‘wall stickers’ in the UK and we lead an emerging market here. We were featured on several TV shows and the phone pretty much rang constantly. We secured commercial clients and we doubled our turnover almost every year for 4 years in a row. And then the world changed.

In the spring of 2012 Google launched a change of their search algorithm, which took us from the top 3 spot for ‘wall stickers’ to… no where! We were still searchable, but we were on page 10 or worse for ‘wall stickers’ and over the next few months the orders virtually stopped coming in and the phone stopped ringing. We are so lucky that we had some commercial clients, or we would have been out of business, so we pivoted from online sales to working with our commercial clients which is where we are today with a thriving business that prints and installs wall graphics all over the UK.

However I recently we’ve been working on updating our website and I realised how much I missed it all. This means that I will be blogging again and introducing new products regularly.
